From Ideas to Income: Exploring Enterprise Opportunities with Women in Ngurumani, Kajiado
On 6 October 2026, Yamoi Women Enterprise Initiative engaged 32 women from Ngurumani Village in the Magadi area of Kajiado County for an Ideas to Income entrepreneurship session.
The session provided an opportunity for the women to come together, share their experiences and explore practical ways of turning ideas and available resources within their community into income-generating opportunities.
Rather than approaching the session with a fixed project for the women to adopt, the conversation started with the women themselves. We discussed the kinds of activities they would be interested in pursuing, what they felt could work within their community, and the opportunities that could potentially provide sustainable sources of income.
Among the ideas explored were goat rearing and chicken rearing. These were particularly relevant areas for discussion because livestock-based enterprises can provide opportunities for both individual and group businesses, while also allowing women to build on resources and knowledge that may already exist within their communities.
The discussion went beyond simply identifying possible projects. We encouraged the women to think about what it would take to move from an idea to an actual enterprise. This included considering the resources required to get started, the skills needed to manage the activity, potential markets, costs involved and how the women could work together to make their chosen enterprises viable.
For Yamoi, Ideas to Income is about helping women look at entrepreneurship from a practical perspective. An idea on its own is only the beginning. The next step is understanding whether it can work, what is required to make it work, and how it can eventually generate income.
The engagement also gave Yamoi an opportunity to listen to the women and better understand the opportunities and priorities within the community. These conversations are important in shaping programmes that respond to what women actually want to pursue rather than introducing solutions without understanding the local context.
The Ngurumani engagement forms part of Yamoi Women Enterprise Initiative's continued work with women in different communities across Kenya, supporting entrepreneurship, skills development and pathways towards stronger livelihoods.
As we continue engaging communities, our focus remains on creating opportunities for women to identify possibilities, build their capabilities and take practical steps towards turning their ideas into sustainable enterprises.
